MILLAA MILLAA
VILLAGE WALKS
PIONEERING COW STATUE
This depicts milking time in the early days of the Millaa
Millaa district. The area was surveyed in 1910. First land
being taken up in 1910-1911. Pioneering dairy farmers having
to take their produce by Packhorse to the nearest factory or
rely on a carrier. The local factory opened in 1930.
LIONS PARK
Is on the site of the former railway station. lt was opened
in 1921 and closed in 1964. The Railway
Station was often stocked with vast quantities of logs most
of which were sent by rail to Cairns. Millaa Millaa was 100
%2 miles from Cairns. A railway signal from the Millaa
Millaa railway station Is on display in town. The picnic
Shelter shed has been erected very close to the old railway
station Site. Features of the Park include Picnic Shelter
Shed, Picnic Tables, children's modern Playground, Toilets,
award winning gardens, Recently over 200 local native
rainforest trees have been planted.
LARGE KAURI PINE LOG
The tree was a victim of Cyclone Stephen in 2003. The tree
was gifted to the people of Queensland in 1944 by the
families who owned the land the tree was on. The tree is
estimated to be in the vicinity Of 1000 years old and to
weigh more than 200 tonnes
BURKIES PLACE.
A restored area planted with local rainforest species in
memory of the pioneers of this district. The area was named
after Enid Burke affectionately known as BURKIE who worked
many voluntary Hours establishing gardens in the town.
EACHAM HISTORICAL MUSEUM.
Contains many historical photos, articles, displays of our
early history, well worth a visit. Of particular Interest
are the ones of the early timber and dairy industries.
HISTORICAL MURAL.
A large Mural on the side wall of Tobins Shop depicts some
of the History of the Millaa Millaa district.
HAROLD WEST WALK.
A picturesque rainforest walk along St. Patricks creek. This
creek had become degraded over time. Much of the early work
of restoration and replanting of native rainforest trees was
done by
The late Harold West. His family was one of the early
pioneers of this district.
BOTANICAL WALK.
This area was completely cleared in the early days and
subsequently replanted with native species of the area. The
Health Centre is opposite this area. To return to town
either walk down Palm Avenue, cross over to Pine St. ( runs
parallel to the Malanda Millaa Millaa road ) or back track
down the HAROLD WEST walk.
